Service Learning Program Service Projects
|
De La Salle Middle School Service
Learning Program is an initiative to encourage students to participate in
organized service projects that will meet local neighborhood and community
needs. The service learning program will be comprised of an academic
curriculum coupled with related service projects. The combination of class
work and service projects will foster students' knowledge and compassion
towards social and environmental justice.
Curriculum: Each student will be required to participate in a Service Learning class at the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade level. All classes will offer education on a particular subject, followed by a similar service project (e.g. learning about the causes of homelessness and then volunteering at a shelter). The students will then be asked to discuss and write about their experiences. The service learning classes and projects will be a six-week program and will contribute 20% toward the students’ religion grades. Classes and projects will be graded on students’ written assignments and participation. Class periods will be one hour per week.

Service projects will be within the immediate neighborhood or within close proximity of De La Salle. The objective of service projects is to help students understand that they are responsible for each other and for the worldwide community and this responsibility can be demonstrated by community service. Service projects will be an hour and a half per week and will be required for all students. A permission slip signed by parents will be required for students to attend. Examples of service learning projects include:
Voluntary Service Projects: Similar objective to required service projects, but participation will be voluntary. Students may sign up to enroll in program. Voluntary service projects will be an hour and a half per week.
